Carbonology has become the first verification body to join The Anti-Greenwash Charter, setting a new benchmark in their industry for transparency and trust in sustainability communication. “We tell companies to be transparent,” says Jody Edwards, Partnerships Manager at Carbonology.
“It only makes sense that we hold ourselves to the same standard.”

Making carbon claims credible
Carbonology is an independent third-party verifier that checks the accuracy of carbon data and reporting. Its mission is simple: to make sure that organisations’ carbon claims can be trusted.
“It’s not about catching people out,” says Edwards.
“It’s about recognising where something isn’t quite right and helping to put it right. Everyone makes mistakes. Verification gives companies the confidence to be honest about where they are and to keep improving.”
That belief in progress over perfection made The Anti-Greenwash Charter a natural fit. “We’re both working towards the same goal,” she explains. “Restoring trust by helping people communicate more clearly and honestly about their impact.”
Â
Practising what they preach
Joining the Charter encouraged Carbonology to look closely at its own communication practices. One of the first steps was developing a Green Claims Policy.
“It really made us think,” says Edwards. “We already had high standards, but writing them down helped us build consistency. It also gave us the chance to update some of our internal processes so that everyone knew exactly what good looked like.”
The response from clients has been positive.
“When I mention that we’re a signatory of The Anti-Greenwash Charter, people nod approvingly. It reinforces our credibility as a verification body and shows that we are living our values.”

Why stronger standards matter
In her role, Edwards has seen both the progress and the pitfalls of current carbon reporting frameworks. “Some companies only verify their data once every three years,” she explains.
“But if you’re reporting every year, you should be verifying every year too. That’s how you stay accountable.”
She believes the Charter helps fill these gaps by setting a higher voluntary standard that goes beyond regulation. “Regulations are important, but they don’t always go far enough. The Charter helps organisations show that they’re serious about transparency, not just compliance.”
Â
Collaboration over competition
Edwards first discovered the Charter through a sustainability contact. “I was fascinated when I heard about it,” she says.
“It felt like meeting a kindred organisation that’s doing the same work in a different way.”
For her, partnership is key. “We’re all trying to make sustainability communication more credible. The more we can collaborate, the more impact we can have. I’d love to see more opportunities for networking and shared learning between signatories.”

Breaking the silence
Asked about the biggest challenge facing businesses today, Edwards doesn’t hesitate. “Greenhushing,” she says.
“A lot of companies stay quiet because they’re scared of saying the wrong thing. But silence doesn’t build trust either.”
She believes the solution lies in due diligence and honest communication. “If you’ve done the work and had it verified, you can speak confidently about it. The Charter helps give companies that confidence.”
Â
Leading with integrity
Becoming a signatory has already started to shape how Carbonology communicates, both internally and externally. But Edwards sees this as the beginning of a longer journey.
“It’s like holding up a mirror,” she says.
“You see what you’re already doing well and where you can still improve. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being honest.”
For Carbonology, that honesty is the foundation of credibility and the heart of leadership in sustainability communication.
